Drew Houston's MVP wasn't an app — it was a three-minute video, packed with in-jokes for Digg.

The ugly part. Syncing files flawlessly across machines was nearly impossible to demo half-built, so Drew Houston didn't build it first. He recorded a three-minute screencast of how it would work, salted with references Digg and Hacker News users would catch.

What it proved. The video did the selling. The beta waiting list jumped from 5,000 to 75,000 people overnight — demand confirmed before the hardest engineering was finished.

Now. A public company used by hundreds of millions — but the first version that caught fire was a video.
