The ugly part. Amazon started as a bare online bookstore Jeff Bezos ran from a rented garage, packing orders on desks made of doors laid across sawhorses. The site was a plain, text-heavy catalog; the team celebrated each sale with a literal bell.

What they shipped anyway. It didn't need to be pretty — it needed every book in print and reliable shipping. Orders came in faster than they could pack them, and the novelty bell got switched off within weeks.

Now. A multi-trillion-dollar company selling roughly everything — but it started with books in a garage.
